Say East Turkistan, Not “Xinjiang”
The word “Turkistan” is a Persian term that translates to “Land Of The Turks”, it was traditionally used alongside the other names which Turkic peoples of Asia identified themselves with. However, in the late 18th & 19th centuries Russian and Chinese annexation of land in Turkistan would result in new names given by their imperialist captors.
Who Are the Uyghurs?
Uyghurs are ethically and culturally Turkic people native to East Turkistan, currently occupied by China. Uyghurs are predominantly Muslims practicing a moderate form of Islam.
