China imprisons more than 449,000 Uyghurs in East Turkistan

In a recent development, a human rights report has shed light on the alarming situation facing Uyghurs in East Turkistan. According to the Uyghur Human Rights Project, over 449,000 Uyghurs are currently imprisoned in Xinjiang, equating to about one in 26 Uyghurs and non-Han people in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region in northwest China were incarcerated in 2022. This report underscores the severity of human rights abuses in the region, including arbitrary detention and cultural suppression.
While the Uyghur and other Turkic people in East Turkistan made up only 1% of China's overall population, the report indicated, the ethnic minority in the Uyghur Region account for 34% of the country's estimated prison population.
During his trip to China, Secretary of State Antony Blinken raised concerns about these abuses in meetings with Chinese officials. However, Beijing criticized Blinken for purportedly interfering in its domestic affairs.
I urge you to raise awareness about the human rights crisis in East Turkistan and advocate for concrete measures to hold the Chinese government accountable for its actions. Canada has a moral obligation to stand up for human rights and justice, and I trust that you will take the necessary steps to address this urgent issue. The actions taken by China in East Turkistan against Uyghurs constitute genocide, to prevent any more deaths and the ethnic cleansing of Uyghurs and other Turkic people in East Turkistan, this is urgent that the Canadian government take action now.
