Remember When We Said:
“Never Again” ?
Welcome to the International Support for Uyghurs (ISU)
International Support for Uyghurs (ISU) is a non-for-profit organization based in Montreal, Canada. ISU is dedicated to supporting the Uyghurs and other Turkic people oppressed and persecuted by the Chinese Communist Party in East Turkistan through advocacy projects and grassroots initiatives. ISU works to magnify the voices of the East Turkistan diaspora members in Canada and around the world.
Since the East Turkistan takeover in 1949, the Chinese Communist Party has been much more oppressive towards the Uyghurs than any other Chinese regime in history. Especially in the last few decades, the peoples of East Turkistan have been facing increasingly widespread and deep racism and islamophobia as a Muslim ethnic group. The Chinese state has been systematically marginalizing Uyghur and other Turkic languages, cultures and identities in order to assimilate them into the Chinese state.
What is Happening in East Turkistan?
Who Are the Uyghurs?
Uyghurs (or Uighurs, Uygurs) are ethnically and culturally Turkic people native to East Turkistan, currently occupied by China. Uyghurs are predominantly Muslims practicing a moderate form of Islam. An estimated 25-35 million Uyghurs live in East Turkistan and abroad. According to the 2017 national statistics, Chinese sources put the number at 11.65 million. The Uyghurs are the most persecuted people today.
Join us for a memorable evening on November 19 at the Université de Montréal for “Capturing the Uyghur Genocide through the Lens of Colonialism.”
