1705 began with the abolition of the Turkic State of Yarkent by the Mongol Dzunggar invasion and continued with the subsequent rule of the Khojas and Dzunggars in southern and northern East Turkistan, respectively. The Manchu Qing Dynasty conquered East Turkistan in 1759, leading to numerous Turkic rebellions until Yaqub Beg declared total independence and established the State of Kashgaria in 1863. East Turkistan's independence was recognized by several world powers, but it was ultimately incorporated into the Manchu Empire in 1884. In 1860 the Uyghurs in Ili rebelled against the Empire and established Ili Sultanate. However, the Tsarist Russian Empire annexed the Ili Sultanate in 1881 in accordance with the Treaty of Saint Petersburg with the Manchu Empire.

East Turkistan was governed by the Manchu Qing Empire until the Chinese Revolution in 1911, after which it was ruled by Uyghur and other Turkic elites and Chinese warlords under the influence of the Chinese Nationalists.

In 1931, Uyghurs revolted against Chinese rule in Qumul and rebellion spread all across East Turkistan.  Uyghurs revoltedin southern East Turkistan against Chinese rule in 1931, resulting in the declaration of an independent government in Khotan. Uyghurs and other Turkic peoples then joined together in Kashgar to establish the first East Turkistan Republic in 1933, only to lose their independence after its dissolution in 1934.
