China Accidentally Confirms Scale of Genocide

A new whitepaper released by the Chinese authorities has shed light into the scale of the human rights violations in East Turkistan by disclosing that, from 2014 to 2019, 1.29 million Uyghurs have gone through “vocational training” each year. These figures now confirm what has been known by the Uyghur diaspora, and based on on-the-ground sources, that more than 60% Uyghurs have been affected by Beijing’s policy of “vocational camps” which are really the cultural and physical genocide of the Uyghurs. From previous government leaks, it has now been conclusively established that on the pretext of religious and cultural practices, Uyghurs are being forcibly rounded up and placed into these concentration camps. Detainees are processed at these camps prior to being shipped out to forced labour camps and eventually deemed “graduated”. It is still unknown whether detainees are ever released from these forced labour camps, the same “worksites” which are used to taint the global supply chain.

We call on the Canadian government to implement stringent measures to prevent the importation of forced labour goods by mandating the Canadian Border Services Agency and other relevant agencies to prioritize the seizure of suspected forced labour goods. Additionally, Canada should pass legislation which puts the onus on corporations to prove their supply chains are not entangled in the forced labour system.

We suggest that the Canadian government take note of what the US has recently issued to US businesses in regards to using supply chains in China and to use this as a model for upcoming Federal legislation and to target industries that profit from the Chinese forced labour camps and the subsequent human rights abuses.

Recommendations

We highly recommend the Canadian Government to adopt similar directives as has been implemented by the US so that Canada too makes legislation that puts the onus on corporations to prove that their supply chains are not engaged in the forced labor system, directly or indirectly.

We call upon the Canadian government to implement stringent measures in preventing the importation of any goods tha is being manufactured from these labour camps. Therefore, to mandate the Canadian Border Services Agency and other relevant agencies to prioritize the seizure of suspected forced labor goods and implement heavy fines for ignoring directives.

We hope that Companies will divest from supply chains that are using forced labour and by doing so, are declaring their support of human rights.
