Urgent Concerns Regarding China’s Transnational Repression of Uyghur Canadians
International Support for Uyghurs (ISU) wants to bring to your urgent attention a matter of growing concern regarding China’s escalating transnational repression against Canadian-born Uyghurs, which violates international norms.
According to recent reports, China has increased efforts to intimidate and silence Uyghur activists in the U.S by threatening their family members who remain in China. Uyghur-, including Elfidar Iltebir, president of the Uyghur American Association, have faced harassment, online threats, and pressure from Chinese agents operating abroad. This has forced many to reconsider their activist work for fear of endangering their families.
The FBI has acknowledged this issue, labeling these actions as transnational repression (TNR), and has increased awareness and support for affected communities. However, despite these efforts, the harassment persists, with many activists receiving direct threats via social media and even invitations to meet with Chinese officials abroad.
While we appreciate the FBI’s efforts, it is clear that more must be done to safeguard the rights and safety of Uyghurs. This situation demands stronger governmental action to ensure that those residing in Canada are not subject to foreign intimidation and repression.
We urge the government to take additional measures to counter China’s transnational repression, to protect the Uyghur community, and to ensure that those living in Canada can continue to advocate for human rights without fear.
