Condemned Uyghur official dies in prison in East Turkistan
On behalf of the International Support for Uyghurs (ISU), I write to provide you with this week's update on Uyghurs' critical situation and to urge immediate action. Ekber Imin, a successful Uyghur businessman and philanthropist, has died in a Chinese concentration camp after being detained for nine years. Imin, who was 57 years old, was arrested in 2015 and sentenced to 25 years in prison on charges of "separatism" and "religious extremism." His family was only informed of his death recently, with no details provided about the cause or exact date of his passing. Imin's case highlights the ongoing persecution of Uyghur intellectuals and businesspeople in China. The lack of transparency surrounding Imin's death raises serious concerns about the treatment of Uyghurs in East Turkistan. This incident underscores the urgent need for international intervention to protect Uyghur rights and lives in East Turkistan and in the diaspora.
We urge the Canadian Parliament to:
Demand a thorough investigation into the circumstances of Ekber Imin's death and the condition of other Uyghur detainees in East Turkestan
Call for immediate access for international observers to detention facilities in East Turkestan.
Impose targeted sanctions on Chinese officials responsible for human rights abuses against Uyghurs.
Canada has a responsibility to stand for human rights. We hope you will lead efforts to address these urgent issues.ISU remains committed to promoting human rights and would welcome the opportunity to provide further information on these critical issues.
Thank you for your attention to this important matter. We look forward to hearing your thoughts and actions on these pressing concerns.
