Uyghur group facing Chinese 'repression' in France
The European Uyghur Institute (IODE) is reporting persistent China state-sponsored harassment and intimidation of the Uyghur diaspora in France. The situation escalated during Chinese President Xi Jinping's recent visit. The legal complaint filed by IODE underscores the urgent need for international attention and intervention to protect Uyghur communities abroad from such transnational repression.
The experiences of Uyghurs in France reflect a broader pattern of global intimidation and surveillance by Beijing. Uyghurs in Canada similarly face harassment and pressure fearing repercussions against their families in East Turkistan if they speak out or engage in activism. This underscores the extensive reach of state control and the precarious position of the Uyghur diaspora, balancing their cultural identity and safety in foreign lands while connected to their oppressed homeland.
Canada, along with the international community, must amplify its support for the Uyghur diaspora. Currently, there is no mechanism for Canadian Uyghurs to report intimidation. We urge you to meet with the CSIS and RCMP to raise the importance of protecting Uyghurs.
By advocating for stronger protections and holding the government of China accountable, you can stand with Canadian Uyghurs in their fight for justice and human rights.
